Open until filled Southern Oregon Education Service is seeking a Behavior Support Specialist to work within a multi-tiered system of behavioral and mental health supports in Jackson, Josephine, and Klamath Counties. This position will serve component districts as part of their tier 1, 2, and 3 intervention supports, as well as provide training within our region in support of student success. The ideal candidate will have a proven track record of developing effective behavioral intervention strategies for youth in a variety of educational settings, as well as:

  • A background in working with youth experiencing significant mental health and behavioral barriers in an educational setting.
  • Knowledge of and the ability to effectively apply trauma-informed practices in an educational setting.
  • The belief that all students can and will learn when given the appropriate tools and support.
  • The ability to collaborate effectively and professionally with a large team of professionals working together to ensure the success of youth in every setting.
  • The ability to provide custom-tailored individual and group training to a variety of educational personnel as needed to successfully support the reintegration of youth into less restrictive settings, such as general education classrooms at neighborhood schools.

Behavior Support Specialist

Position Goal: Provide consultation, training, and interventions to address emotional, behavioral, and social disorders and to increase students' success in educational environments.

Essential Functions:
  1. Collaborate as a member of a multidisciplinary team to establish a shared plan of action and coordinate instructional and intervention activities.
  2. Evaluate performance of communication, social, behavioral, academic, vocational, and independent living skills.
  3. Collaboratively develop IEPs to address emotional, social, and behavioral needs with parents and school personnel.
  4. Participate in multidisciplinary, IEP, placement, intervention, and other educational decisions.
  5. Provide individual and small group instruction related to IEP goals.
  6. Develop and implement positive behavioral intervention strategies, classroom rules, and individual and group management programs.
  7. Plan and direct systematic observation and recording procedures related to emotional, social, and behavioral needs.
  8. Organize, analyze, and interpret data in relation to current student performance, behavior targets, progress toward emotional, behavioral, and social goals, and instructional/curriculum strategies.
  9. Conduct functional behavior assessments (FBAs) and develop and participate in the implementation of behavior support plans (BSPs) and crisis intervention plans (CIPs).
  10. Complete all required paperwork regarding the use of Nonviolent Crisis Intervention and restraint/seclusion procedures.
  11. Provide behavioral consultation to classroom staff and recommend, design, and implement alternative interventions.
  12. Communicate clearly and appropriately and make independent decisions within established policies and procedures.
  13. Train classroom staff in targeted intervention strategies and data collection procedures.
  14. Train, coordinate, provide modeling, coaching, observation, and feedback, and gather data regarding the job performance of Educational Assistant(s).
  15. Establish and maintain positive and cooperative relationships with ESD, local district, and community agency staff.
  16. Participate in professional growth activities.
  17. Comply with local district and ESD rules and policies.
  18. Perform physical requirements unaided or with the assistance of reasonable accommodation.
  19. Perform job-related tasks as designated by the supervisor.

Minimum Prerequisites:
  1. TSPC licensure (Oregon Handicapped Learner, Severely Handicapped Learner, Speech/ Language Pathology, School Psychology endorsed license, or related field) or ODE authorization.
  2. Master's degree in special education, school psychology, counseling, or social work from an accredited college or university.
  3. Knowledge and experience with children with disabilities who have challenging behaviors and applicable intervention strategies.
  4. Demonstrated competence regarding the use of computers and other technology devices and systems for communication, data recording and reporting, and student instruction and support.
  5. Ability to obtain CPR and First Aid certification.
  6. Ability to obtain Nonviolent Crisis Intervention certification.

LOCATION: In person, at assigned school(s) in Jackson County.
LENGTH OF POSITION: 1.0 FTE / 190 Day (academic year)
SALARY RANGE: Per Collective Bargaining Agreement: $62,844.54 - $98,865.34 for 2024-2025 school year. 2025-2026 rate will increase based on outcome of bargaining.
