Responsibilities include instruction on fundamental skills, strategy, safety procedures, and physical training, as well as fostering moral values, sportsmanship, self‑discipline, and confidence among athletes. The Coach also supervises assistant coaches, managers, and student assistants, using common sense and good judgment when duties are not explicitly covered.Supervision ReceivedThe Head Athletic Coach reports to the building principal and collaborates with the Coordinator of Secondary Athletics and the Building Activities Coordinator.Duties and ResponsibilitiesGeneralHas thorough knowledge of all Medford School District athletic policies and implements them with the program staff.Knows Oregon School Activities Association rules and Southern Oregon Middle School Athletic Conference rules; implements and interprets them consistently.Understands the proper administrative chain of command and directs all requests or grievances through appropriate channels.Works to increase morale and cooperation within the entire athletic program.Knows effective safety procedures in their sport and implements a program of instruction in safe practices.Staff ResponsibilitiesEstablishes the fundamental philosophy, skills, and techniques to be taught by staff, and designs and conducts a clinic for the program.Trains and informs staff; encourages professional growth by attending clinics per district policy and funding.Delegates duties, supervises implementation, and, at season's end, analyzes staff effectiveness and collaborates with the principal on assistant evaluations.Performs other duties assigned by the Principal and the Coordinator of Secondary Athletics.Administrative DutiesAssists the Activities Director in scheduling and transportation, and checks for conflicts.Prepares the program for scheduled events or practices, coordinating with maintenance and school staff.Ensures compliance with district, SOMSAC, and OSAA requirements concerning physical examinations, consent forms, waivers, and academic eligibility.Provides safeguards for equipment and facilities and advises on policy or procedural changes.Prepares the annual season summary.Student ResponsibilitiesProvides training rules and regulations for each athlete.Monitors athletes' grades and conduct.Supervises athletes before, during, and after practices and contests, and travels, ensuring guidance and safety.Initiates injury and emergency programs; collaborates with the athletic trainer on prevention and rehabilitation.Ensures completion of injury paperwork and submission within 24 hours.Directs student managers, assistants, and statisticians.Determines discipline per state, district, and school guidelines; teaches due‑process rules; contacts parents when needed.Finance and Equipment ResponsibilitiesParticipates in budgeting, specifying equipment and supplies and seeking cost estimates.Accounts for all supplies and equipment, reporting losses or non‑returns; manages issuing, storage, and reconditioning.Follows district purchasing procedures and maintains accurate records.Supervises equipment rooms, coaches' offices, and the issuance process.Maintains locker rooms and equipment cleanliness; secures facilities upon departure.Instills respect for equipment and school property.Public Relations ResponsibilitiesOrganizes parents, coaches, players, and guests for pre‑season meetings.Promotes the sport within the school and externally via booster clubs, YMCA, and other youth sports organizations.Maintains good public relations with boosters, officials, volunteers, faculty, parents, and fans.QualificationsTo perform this position successfully, an individual must be able to perform each essential duty satisfactorily.Minimum Skills and AbilitiesKnowledge:Rules and regulations of the assigned sport.Fundamentals, techniques, and strategies of the assigned sport.Safety factors involved in the assigned sport.Physical abilities and limitations at the instruction level.Medford School District athletic policies, SOMSAC, and OSAA rules.Skills:Effective communication with people.Demonstration of basic skills of the assigned sport.Organization, supervision, and evaluation of the total sport program.Attitudes:Positive attitude.Enthusiastic.Willingness to cooperate and adapt to varying situations.Experience:Previous coaching experience in the assigned sport preferred.Previous participation in the assigned sport preferred.Previous teaching experience preferred.Education:Valid Oregon teacher certification preferred.College training in coaching desirable.Physical Demands and Working ConditionsClimbing, stooping, kneeling, reaching, standing, sitting, walking, pushing, pulling, sweeping, talking, seeing, hearing.Lifting requirements: light (≤20 lb), medium (≤50 lb), heavy (≤100 lb);
